Understanding PCL Threads vs PDO Threads: Key Differences

Understanding PCL Threads vs PDO Threads: Key Differences

What is a thread lift?

A thread lift is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure designed to lift and tighten loose skin using specialised biocompatible threads.

The barbed threads are inserted underneath the skin using a needle or cannula. The threads essentially provide a scaffolding that holds skin in its desired position until the body lays down new collagen over time.

The absorbable threads then dissolve over 18-24 months, leaving the skin in its lifted position. Additionally, the stimulation of collagen in the area will provide further tightening and improve the skin’s appearance.

When compared to more invasive face lifting techniques, a thread lift achieves a relaxed and fresh, but natural appearance which preserves and enhances the natural contours of the face.

Thread lifting procedures are typically performed under local anaesthesia and take between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the treatment areas. Although there is usually minimal downtime associated with thread lifting, all cosmetic procedures carry risks. You can find risks and related downtime specific to thread lifting here.

When considering a thread lift, it’s essential to understand that not all threads are the same. The type of thread used can significantly impact the procedure’s outcomes and longevity.

PCL threads VS PDO threads

PCL Threads are made from Polycaprolactone, a biocompatible and biodegradable polymer. Polycaprolactone is known for its slow degradation rate, which makes it suitable for long-term cosmetic applications. PCL threads, such as the Aptos Threads used at Prèface Cosmetic, are best used for long-term skin rejuvenation purposes, as their absorption time is 18-24 months.

Comparatively, Polydioxanone (PDO) threads such as Mint or Matrix threads are best used for short-term skin rejuvenation purposes, rather than to achieve a long-term lifting effect of the skin. This is because PDO threads demonstrate an average absorption period of 6-8 months.

PDO threads work to provide immediate skin tightening and stimulate collagen production, leading to enhanced skin texture and temporary lifting. However, because their absorption period is significantly shorter, offering minimal collagenesis, the lifting effect is also short-lived when compared to PCL threads.

Why PCL threads?

Polycaprolactone (PCL) threads are increasingly becoming the preferred choice for many individuals seeking long-lasting, natural-looking results. Here’s why PCL threads stand out:

Slow Absorption Rate: PCL threads have an extended absorption time, typically ranging from 18-24 months. This allows for prolonged stimulation of the skin’s natural healing processes.

Collagen Stimulation: The prolonged presence of PCL threads in the skin encourages the production of collagen and elastin, essential proteins for maintaining skin firmness and elasticity.

Minimal Downtime: The procedure typically involves minimal recovery time compared to more invasive lifting procedures.

Choosing Aptos PCL threads offered by Prèface Cosmetic offers numerous advantages, including long-lasting results, effective collagen stimulation and a minimally invasive approach with natural-looking outcomes. Their biocompatibility and versatility make them an appealing option for those seeking to enhance their appearance without the need for invasive surgery.
